Gubernatorial candidate Susana Martinez wants to take away the only treatment that helps thousands of seriously ill New Mexicans who are benefitting from medicinal marijuana treatment. But for some, the legislation came too late. Click here for to watch the thirty second television version of "Don't Take Away Our Medicine."
In 2007, New Mexico became the 12th state in the country to allow legal access to medical marijuana, overwhelmingly passing with bi-partisan support The Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act.
Susana Martinez, the leading candidate for governor in this year's election, has said that if elected governor, she intends to repeal New Mexico's medical marijuana law. She believes that federal law should trump the medical marijuana law passed by New Mexico's elected representatives - despite Attorney General Eric Holder's statement that the federal government won't interfere with lawful state medical marijuana programs. A large majority of citizens support New Mexico's program, which is regarded as the best and tightest-run in the country, restricting access to only the sickest and terminally ill patients suffering from diseases such as:
- Cancer
- HIV/AIDS
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Epilepsy
- Glaucoma
- Spinal Cord Injury
- Crohn's Disease
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease)
- Hepatitis C
For some patients, medical marijuana is the only treatment that relieves their symptoms without toxicity and serious side effects. Many of the patients in New Mexico's program are in the final stages of their lives and all are seriously ill. Why would Susana Martinez want to take away their medicine? On November 2, stand up for the seriously ill patients in New Mexico by voting against Susana Martinez.
